“I Am a Child of God”:
I am a child of God,
And he has sent me here,
Has given me an earthly home
With parents kind and dear.
I am a child of God,
And so my needs are great;
Help me to understand his words
Before it grows too late.
I am a child of God,
Rich blessings are in store;
If I but learn to do his will
I’ll live with him once more.
Chorus:
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me,
Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do
To live with him someday.
This was always one of my favorite songs growing up. There is no more powerful hymn than this one, especially when little children go up and sing it during the children's primary program in sacrament meeting every year. It teaches such great truth.
In The Family: A Proclamation to the World, the first thing that is stated in it is that we are children of God and that we are created in His image:
"ALL HUMAN BEINGS—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose."
We are so blessed as well with the knowledge from this gospel where we came from and who we are. In the talk given by President Marion G Romney, "We Are Children of God," she states,
"Only those of us who are members of the Church know of these great eternal truths relating to who we are. We are fortunate to know who we are, where we came from, why we are here, and where we may go. And of great significance, we know how to get where we desire to go. How fortunate we are to know while in mortality the importance of our earthlife conduct."
It is such a privilege in my life to know where I came from and that I am a Daughter of God. There are days where I feel so inadequate in this world and I feel like I am a nobody. I know everyone has felt this way in points of their life. I am so grateful for this gospel and growing up always being told that I am a Daughter of my Heavenly Father who loves me so much. When I am struggling and when I remember that, I can get through anything. I remember being in Young Women's and every Sunday we would stand and repeat the Young Women's theme "We are daughters of our Heavenly Father, who loves us, and we love him..." What a powerful statement. Heavenly Father loves his children so much. If you are having any doubts about that, or need reassurance, pray to Him. There is nothing that makes Him happier than to tell you how much he loves you. Watch for those little things throughout the day that shows that He loves you and wants the best for you. I promise you, you will answer your prayers and he will give you a feeling of love, peace, and comfort letting you know that you are His dear child and that He loves you more than you can even comprehend.
This picture right here is definitely one of my all time favorites of Christ. We have this picture in my home in a big frame. When I look at this picture, my heart floods with God's love for me. The love for each and everyone of his Children is shown in the picture.
I don't know if you haven't noticed already, but I LOVE scriptures and quotes from our apostles and prophets. I love reading talks and messages they give us and I use them quite frequently when I am teaching others or trying to help people in need. There are no other perfect words. I love how President Gordon B. Hinkley closes his talk in April 2003, "You Are a Child of God,"
"If you really know that you are a child of God, you will also know that He expects much of you, His child. He will expect you to follow His teachings and the teachings of His dear Son, Jesus. He will expect you to be generous and kind to others. He will be offended if you swear or use foul language. He will be offended if you are dishonest in any way, if you should cheat or steal in the slightest. He will be happy if you remember the less fortunate in your prayers to Him. He will watch over you and guide you and protect you. He will bless you in your schoolwork and in your Primary. He will bless you in your home, and you will be a better boy or girl, obedient to your parents, quarreling less with your brothers and sisters, helping about the home."
